Chapter Thirteen

Nate

Nate tugged his gray sweatshirt over his jeans and followed Dana up a stairway with a red, round logo centering the landing, letters in white reading, Ballast Point Brewery. “You saw this on YouTube?”

“I did and it looked really cool. I mean, the place is a brewery with a pirate theme.” With a quick laugh, he glanced at Nate.

At the top of the landing, Nate grabbed Dana’s hand. “I’m surprised the Pirates of the Caribbean ride wasn’t on your list seeing as how you like pirates so much.” Dana was like a kid in a candy store, pointing out the sights as they’d walked down The District sidewalk from the hotel. It seemed he knew a little bit about everything.

“Oh, it is, just wasn’t at the very top of the list.” Dana led him into the dining area, past a ship’s wheel lit up on the wall, then through dark-wood tables and past a colorful painting of a koi in a pond. He pointed at the bar. “Look at the beer bottle chandelier.”

Nate’s gaze followed Dana’s finger to a large square light fixture made up of woods and beer bottles. “Pretty cool.” He edged into his side. “You want to sit on the patio, right?” It’s a good thing they were both wearing sweatshirts. It got cold out here at night.

“Yeah.” Dana led him past a wall with sketches of skeleton pirates at sea, fish, and giant octopi. “Here.” He opened a glass door and guided Nate to a patio with a sea of white tables and chrome and wood chairs, all resting under wood beams and bare bulbed lights. He stopped and spread his arm wide. “Look at that view.”

Nate looked out across the lights of The District and beyond, to the park, the rides all lit up and twinkling with movement. “Very cool. And here I thought I was going to be the one showing you things.” He chuckled.

Dana tugged on his hand, bringing him close, then kissed his cheek. “Oh, you will.” He took a seat at an open four-top table and Nate dropped in beside him.

A waitress came by and gave them menus. “Can I get drinks to start?”

Perusing the menu, Nate said, “Damn, some of these beers have some high alcohol content.” And there were three pages of them.

Dana leaned into Nate’s side. “Let’s get a flight, so we can taste a bunch of them, and some of the plates to share.” He smiled at him.

“Sure, you pick.” Nate admired Dana’s profile, his strong nose, and plump lips. Dana could have whatever he wanted.

Dana pointed at the menu. “Let’s get a flight of the barrel aged beers.”

“Sure.” The waitress walked off.

Peeking at the section of the menu Dana pointed at, Nate said, “Dude, those have the most alcohol. Are you trying to get me drunk again?” He smirked. He was not going to pass out on Dana ever again.

Dana set his menu on the table. “No, only drunk enough to spill all your secrets.” He waggled his brows at Nate.
